Khoroni Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort - a Celebration of Venda's African Dream!

On 21 May 2008, Tusk Venda Resort re-launched as Khoroni Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort, following completion of the first phase of an extensive upgrade and refurbishment programme that is expected to be completed in 2009.

From 1983 to 2001, The Venda Sun Casino and Hotel was owned by the Sun International group. In 2001 it was sold to the Tusk Resorts group and was subsequently renamed Tusk Venda Hotel and Casino.

Tusk Venda Hotel and Casino was purchased by Peermont Hotels, Casinos and Resorts in September 2006 as part of its acquisition of the Tusk Resorts group. The hotel was last upgraded 15 years ago and thus required a substantial refurbishment and upgrade to restore it to a standard acceptable to Peermont. The phase one multi-million rand refurbishment has been completed and phase two is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2008. On 21 May 2008 the property assumed a new identity - Khoroni Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort with the newly refurbished and re-branded Metcourt hotel, upgraded casino, the new, upgraded and refurbished Malingani Restaurant and welcoming public areas. The Tshivenda meaning of Khoroni is "Royal Homestead". This theme of "royalty" has also been taken further - the name of the Malingani restaurant means "Royal Eating".

The Metcourt hotel at Khoroni will be part of a group of six Peermont Metcourt hotels. The Metcourt hotels are popular, modern, contemporary designed, comfortable select-services 3 star hotels that offer refreshing value for money. Current Peermont Metcourt hotels include the Metcourt Laurel at Emperors Palace, O.R. Tambo Airport, Johannesburg; the Metcourt at Frontier, Bethlehem, Free State, South Africa, the Metcourt at The Grand Palm, Gaborone and; the Metcourt in Francistown, Botswana., New Peermont Metcourt hotels scheduled to open in 2009 include the Metcourt at Emperors Palace, O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg and the Metcourt at Rio, Klerksdorp, North West Province.

Anthony Puttergill, Chief Executive Officer of Peermont comments, "After investing R22 million in the first phase of our refurbishment and upgrade programme, we expect to spend a further R3 million during 2008, which will complete the second phase of the resort upgrade, ensuring that the entire resort fits in with the new standards we have established so far. The second phase will include the upgrade and refurbishment of the Conference Centre and Boardroom, the Pool Terrace Patio, and the Pool Terrace Deck. We will also be building a small Slots Privé Area."

He adds, "This will bring the total expenditure to R25 million. Investing in such a large-scale renovation and upgrade also enables the group to make a significant contribution to the local economy. Development of this nature creates a variety of new employment opportunities for local citizens. In addition, upgrading our facilities requires a considerable increase in resources to ensure that Khoroni is well-staffed to offer Peermont's usual world-class service."

In 2009, Peermont will further consider upgrading the exterior facades of the complex, the existing tenant areas, the Misty Forest Club, the tennis courts and the resort's landscaped areas.

Puttergill says that, once the entire refurbishment process is complete, this one-stop entertainment resort will bear the unmistakable Peermont stamp of exceptional service, décor and ambience, all delivering a distinctly African experience, under the overarching umbrella of quality, style and value for money.

Each of Peermont's hotels embraces the communities in which it operates. The resorts also make a contribution to their communities through various CSI activities. Khoroni supports the South African Child Welfare Asibavikele Programme in Thohoyandou. This programme looks after 69 vulnerable orphans, aged from birth to 18 years. The services they provide range from helping children without the necessary documents, e.g. birth certificates, to access child support grants and other grants available to abused and neglected children. Asibavikele identifies foster parents or alternate care for the children, ensuring they have a safe, loving home. They also help with emergency relief such as food parcels and clothing for needy children. Khoroni Hotel hosts their annual Christmas Party and fun is had by all. Other projects include the upgrade of the Thohoyandou Victum Empowerment Programme Trauma Centre to the value of R80,000 that assist the abused woman and children in our area with a safe haven based at the Tshilidzini Hospital. We support local schools with donations in the form of computers and printers as well as with the circuit excellance awards in the form of trophies and medals for the pupils and the schools.

Peermont is celebrating Khoroni Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort's new name launch with a number of exciting promotions. The first of these promotions is ‘Wild Wheels', which will see R180 000 in cars and prizes being won. The promotion runs from 21 May to 28 June 2008.
