The official unveiling of the newly refurbished Umfolozi Hotel Casino Convention Resort in Empangeni on 25 January 2011, was a result of a R115-million revamp by the Peermont Group. This exciting destination, located just off the N2 highway, is just inland from Richards Bay and represents everything that you would expect from a luxury resort including fine dining, manicured gardens, elegant décor and a host of entertainment and leisure facilities. This vibrant Zulu themed resort provides a convenient stop for visitor’s en-route through Zululand. The 3-star resort is the ideal destination for those visiting the region, whether for business or pleasure.
The stylish upgrade includes the refurbishment of the stylish 3-star Peermont Metcourt Hotel, the refurbishment of the casino, the addition of a conferencing facility, and a complete redesign of the restaurants and all public areas in the resort. "By investing in this resort we hope to attract even more visitors to Empangeni and the surrounding areas, thereby stimulating local employment and contributing to the economic upliftment of this area." says Anthony Puttergill, Chief Executive Officer of Peermont.
The new Umfolozi Resort is a modern celebration of Zulu culture and offers the residents and visitors to Empangeni a new and unique variety of entertainment, hospitality and conferencing facilities. "The resort retains its African identity and culture with a new, contemporary design theme incorporated into all aspects of the resort from logo to room design." says Mark Jakins, Chief Operations Officer - Online Operations and Group Marketing. The 3-star Peermont Metcourt Hotel offers a contemporary and comfortable 44 room select services hotel with 20 classic rooms, a classic king room, 12 superior twin rooms, seven superior king rooms, three suites and a special assistance room. The resort also offers both smoking and non-smoking rooms.
"With a mixture of business and leisure travellers visiting our resort we wanted to give guests the comfort and quality that they have come to expect from a Peermont resort. The rooms have been specifically designed to encourage rest and relaxation and provide a haven for guests to escape to" says Herman Brits, Umfolozi General Manager.
To transform the resort and upgrade all the public areas, Peermont turned towards renowned interior designer, Alan Hurlbatt from LLP Interior Architects to conceptualise and complete the extensive refurbishment project. Peermont's brief was to create a place of distinction, comfort, and quality, where business and leisure travellers can relax, unwind and be entertained.
All the décor and soft furnishings have been specially selected to emphasis the resort's trademark image of a contemporary Zulu culture. "We were looking to create a modern and contemporary feel with colours and patterns inspired by Zulu arts and crafts. A modern celebration of the Zulu culture" continues Mark Jakins. Contemporary style furniture sympathetic to the classical lines and forms was combined with colourful textured fabrics and decals to give the resort a feeling of warmth and vibrancy.
Dining is always a pleasure at Umfolozi with a range of restaurants to choose from; the F.L.A.G Café within the Metcourt hotel for breakfast, the Sugar Room Bar and Lounge for great evening entertainment and cocktails, and the Umoja Bistro where guests can enjoy an a la carté dining experience. A deli serving light meals is also available on the casino floor.
Guests to the resort can enjoy facilities including the pool terrace with a stylish swimming pool, the convention facilities, games arcade, child care services and outdoor adventure park. The refurbished colourful casino offers 267 slot machines in both smoking and non-smoking areas, 12 table games that include Blackjack, American Roulette and Poker.
Umfolozi Resort is surrounded by multiple game reserves, beaches, deep sea fishing, mountain trails, cultural activities and a number of historical sites to be enjoyed by all.
"The new look of the resort has everybody talking in Empangeni," says Brits. "The revamp has brought with it a new energy and vitality that has gripped the resort. We are looking forward to showing off the new look to all our guests both returning and new."
