Laugh your way home with Parker’s Comedy Nights at Emperors Palace
16 March 2011
Emperors Palace is setting aside the corny jokes and bringing in the comedy big-wigs to blow your blues away. With the introduction of Parker’s Comedy Nights every Thursday from 17 March and Parker’s Urban Comedy Nights every Friday from 18 March at the Odeon Showbar, regular doses of laughter return to the Palace of Dreams with the very best stand-up comedy South Africa has to offer.
These comedy nights are produced by comedy stalwart Joe Parker, whose career stretches over 40 years. His career has encompassed one-man stage hits, international tours, comedy compilation videos and the occasional adult panto. Parker's seen the local industry develop from ‘okes' telling a few blue jokes in dodgy pubs to great nights out for the whole. In addition, Parker is a partner in the only comedy club in Africa - Parker's Comedy and Jive - and now brings that special brand of showcase comedy to Emperors Palace.
Parker's Comedy Nights is a showcase of mainstream stand-up comedy every Thursday and opening night on 17 March features MC Darren Maule, Mpho Pops and Martin Jonas plus open-mic. Each show will feature a mix of open spots, support acts and headliners, and will include international acts from time to time.
Parker's Urban Comedy Nights kick off on 18 March and are set to become a vital piece in the ever expanding jigsaw that is South African stand-up comedy. To date, most SA stand-up has come in only two flavours: English and Afrikaans. Parker's Urban Comedy Nights aim to remedy that by presenting stand-up in English and indigenous languages - aka "the vernacular" - in relaxed, upmarket surroundings. Established comedy stars and hot rising talent will feature every week, working for a change in their native tongues. Resident MC for Parker's Urban Comedy Nights will be Kedibone Mulaudzi, a stand-up with his own entrepreneurial flair. Even while he was still learning the ropes as an open-mic act, Kedibone is now one of the most experienced acts in the country, and the perfect host to show off the country's black comedy stars. Each show will also feature a DJ playing a mix of R&B, house and hip-hop, encouraging the audience to strut their stuff on the dance floor. Opening night Lwando Mahlakata and Chris Mapane, plus open-mic and DJ YMEE.
Parker's Comedy Nights will take place every Thursday and Parker's Urban Comedy Nights every Friday at 21h00 in the Odeon Showbar. Tickets are R40 per person and can be purchased at the door. Regret no under 18's allowed.
