Cook a yummy potjie and stand a chance of winning R50 000

22 August 2012

As Heritage Day weekend approaches, it will be time to celebrate South Africa’s cultural diversity and traditions. This year, Peermont and Emperors Palace will celebrate the great South African outdoor cook-out with the Peermont National Potjie competition – a countrywide search for the best potjie cook.

Regional semi-finals will take place around the country at Peermont resorts on 8 September. These will be fun family days, where teams of no more than four people will have an opportunity to prepare, cook and present their secret potjie recipes to the judges.

Two members of each winning team from the regional semi-finals will be hosted at Peermont’s flagship resort, Emperors Palace, in the beautifully manicured gardens of the D’oreale Grande hotel for the grand Heritage Day final on 22 September. Here finalists from across the country will enjoy the festivities and get to pit their recipes against the rest of South Africa’s potjie finalists.

Teams will be judged on criteria from fire-making to teamwork, knife-skills, hygiene, uniqueness, presentation of the dish, and of course taste and texture. The winning team will walk away with a grand prize of R50 000!

As we all know, the whole point of potjiekos is that there’s no rush whatsoever in the cooking process. This will mean that entrants in the Peermont National Potjie competition can look forward to a few hours of banter and relaxation with friends, family and their fellow competitors. A maximum cooking time of five hours is allotted for entrants to prepare ingredients, make the fire, cook their potjie masterpiece and side dish and present it to the judges.

Since Heritage Day was introduced onto the South African calendar in 1995, it has come to be recognized as a perfect chance to celebrate our shared identity by lighting a fire and having a braai, potjie or chisa nyama. In 2008 the idea of a national braai day was endorsed by the National Heritage Council.

Entry forms can be found at the Winners Circle Desk of the applicants’ choice of resort. Entry is free and close on 24 August. Teams chosen for the regional semi-finals will receive a competition pack with the rules and general entry criteria.
