Phil Bates was a member of the original ELO and led ELO Part 2 from 1993 to 1999, after Jeff Lynne left the band. The English rocker also played with notable bands Trickster and Quill. Bates re-formed Electric Light Orchestra in 2011 and has been touring around the world with this unique concert.
“I am excited to tour South Africa again” says Bates from his home in Berlin. “I’m looking forward to playing to our fans in Johannesburg and Cape Town. I love the songs I performed with ELO and I’m enjoying touring Europe, and now South Africa, with these songs that have everyone singing along”.
The music of ELO has been a firm favourite with South African fans since the band originally formed in the 1970s. Electric Light Orchestra sees Phil Bates where he his best – behind the microphone, while playing his legendary style of guitar.
In Gauteng the Electric Light Orchestra concerts will take place in the popular Emperors Palace Centre Court, a venue that has hosted many popular concerts over recent times including Alison Moyet and Bonnie Tyler. Conveniently located alongside O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, with regular complimentary shuttles and now on the new Gautrain bus route directly to and from Rhodesfield Station, the Emperors Palace Hotel Casino Convention and Entertainment Resort is the Palace of Dreams. This mega resort combines the timeless classical elegance of a bygone era with the sheer excitement of a modern casino resort to offer luxurious accommodation in four unique hotels, a glorious health and beauty spa, a magnificent casino with unparalleled gaming enjoyment, the finest in dining options, spectacular entertainment choices and a state-of-the-art cinema complex, world-class conference facilities, and impeccable service.
In the Western Cape, Electric Light Orchestra will take place under the stars, at the popular new outdoor venue at Paarl’s Liqui-Fruit Amphitheatre which is a mere 40 minute drive from the City Bowl through the winelands. . With Breathtaking views over the hills of Paarl, a wine and food fair before and after the show, the Cultivaria Summer series at the Liqui-fruit Amphitheatre is the hot new summers date in the Cape Town Diary.
ELO’s distinctive sound is a combination of pop/rock fused with a string section of violins. For the South African tour, the local string sensation The Muses became a perfect fit and will perform with the Electric Light Orchestra. Gauteng-based The Muses recently released their new album Pop on Strings 2, fusing the sounds of 2 violins, a viola and a cello. The Muses are violinists Ashley Bodill and Mia Snyman, viola player Kate Moore and cellist Laetitia van Wyk. The Muses have performed as prestigious events including the recent Africa Fashion Awards.
Co-founder - Olivia Kotze says “We’ve all studied and learnt to master our instruments and the technical focus makes for some wonderful spontaneous moments,” Kotze continues, “whether we’ve brought our laser show along for the ride or not. We love to get dressed up and have some good clean fun. Classical music may be our foundation, but we’ve left the launch pad, thanks to the success of our debut, and now pop on Strings 2. We are honoured and delighted to be performing alongside the legendary ELO on their South African tour”
